Why Go To a Career Fair?

Now that you're in the groove of the new semester, career fairs are popping up everywhere. Are you ready for the career fair events on your campus? Do you even want to go?

When it comes to career fairs, students have two basic questions to answer:

  1. Do I even want to go to a career fair?
  2. How do I make it work for me?

We estimate that an average of 5-10% of college students attend career fairs on their campuses. Now, this is our own estimation based on discussions with students attending the 95 campuses, where Greek Ladders has a presence. On some campuses, the number is less than 5%!

We'll be the first to admit that career fairs are not the only answer to securing great jobs. However, when 50-100 business, non-profit, education, and government employers come on campus...at one time...the opportunity is golden.

So, while you're mulling over questions like "why would I bother going?"..."what would I do?"..."how do I get ready?"..."how do I make it work for me?" - we've provided some answers.

Job Outlook Great for Fraternity and Sorority Members!

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) released its Job Outlook for 2016. Two of the surveys revealed a high favorability to student leaders, particularly Greeks.

Members of Greek Life, particularly those to become very active within their chapters and on campus, are more appealing to potential employers than their fellow students. While we, at Greek Ladders, knew this all along, the NACE Job Outlook 2016 survey made the confirmation.

The way we see it, highly active fraternity and sorority members possess - in the least - the following attributes.

  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Written and verbal communication
  • Initiative
  • Flexibility
  • Interpersonal
  • Organization
  • Friendly and outgoing personality

What we also found interesting was the Influence of Attributes data collected in the survey. While outstanding academic performance serves as the foundation of workplace success, other attributes are appealing to employers. The principles, ideals, and programs associated with Greek Life sets job-seekers apart from other students. Employers look favorably at students who:

  • Hold leadership positions
  • Involved on campus
  • Volunteer

We're excited by this study, as it validates everything we represent and do to give fraternity and sorority students and young alumni a leg up in their careers.
